8 POB All Well
Out of time to wait further during minimum sea ice season without better sea ice charts from Canada Ice Service.
Distance To Go:
DTG1: Depot Bay Fort Ross to Cambridge Bay 650 nm
DTG2: Cambridge Bay to Nome 1,660 nm
DTG3: Nome to Dutch Harbor 644 nm
DTG4: Dutch Harbor to Astoria OR 1,703 nm
TOTAL: 4,657 nm (Mercator sailings)
Options to transit Bellot Strait will depend on catching a favorable low slack tide to ride the flood from the west entrance through Bellot Strait (tide station: False Strait) to visit the east side of Bellot Strait in order to sign the guest log in the Hudson Bay Company outpost cabin at Fort Ross (tide station: Port Kennedy) which is considered as much a part of local history of the NW Passage as visiting Beechey Island. To transit west through Bellot Strait I recommend catching the high tide at Depot Bay aka Port Kennedy and riding the decending tide west to False Strait. Expect 5 knots of tidal current, hence a speed of greater than 7 knots will be necessary to maintain directional control.
DEPARTURE 20190911-1200 hours on high tide ebbing West at Port Kennedy to False Strait then to Cambridge Bay.
